Project 1.5 Development of synthesis modules for tracer production

This project aims to optimise the chemical and radiochemical processes involved in making radiopharmaceuticals and adapt these for use in remote automated synthesis modules suitable for routine clinical purposes. This approach enables on-site production of clinical quantities of radiolabelled amino acids. Consequently, this project is central to the commercialisation of all radiopharmaceuticals identified in other CRC BID projects.

The work may also involve the incorporation of technologies such as stationary phase reaction systems, microwave technology, microfluidics and in-line purification and detection systems. These technologies have not previously been routinely used in automated radiochemistry modules. CRC BID’s participants already have substantial experience of adapting and adding to commercially available systems. The development of new processes for synthesis will also create opportunities for CRC BID participants to pursue commercial applications for international markets.
